Calligraphy by Jonathan Root (風乾). 高山流水 – High mountain, flowing water
This phrase was laid down by the Daoist auther 列子. The story goes that a musician by the name of 伯牙 met a man by the name of 鐘子期 who truly understood his music. Upon listening to him play, 鐘子期 described the playing of 伯牙 as a high mountain and flowing water.
An expression of the heart is an expression of the land, which in turn upon being acknowledged by another, forms a complete whole. This whole is bountiful and various in nature, as the earth rears all forms of life.
Thus music as an expression of the heart is a reflection of the great harmony — that which brings things together and accords to a man that which is a direct reflection of his soul.
